Bear hurts Sandy-area woman in backyard confrontation

A black bear digging though garbage at a Sandy-area home mildly injured a 58-year-old woman Sunday night when the animal swiped her with its paw.
The woman -- who suffered injuries to her arm, thigh and foot -- discovered the bear eating sunflower seeds from an aluminum garbage can at her back door. The woman treated herself before heading to the hospital.
A confrontation between a human and a bear is "very rare," said Rick Hargrave, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. "For the most part, bears stay where they're supposed to and humans stay where we're supposed to."
When such incidents do happen, Hargrave said, food is the typical culprit.
The bear returned about 3 a.m. today, four hours after the first encounter, apparently still hungry. The woman's husband scared it off.
Officials plan to place a bear trap in the area, about five miles northeast of Sandy. In the meantime, they're reiterating this warning: Don't feed bears.

This is just a few blocks from our home, not far from the high school.

I drove up today and noticed how many roses I have in bloom. They are all so

beautiful. They smell so good. We ate outside tonight so we could admire them.

Today was the first day of the Summer Reading Program and I had taken all the girls to the library and dropped them off. Then I rushed around and got a picnic lunch together and surprised the girls. We went right from the library to the Park. We did not want to come home it was so nice there.

February 4, 1947 - March 31, 2008

Mom was 61 when she passed. She fought brain cancer for 16 months. We

are so blessed to have had all the time with her that we did. The world

will be a mcuh lonelier place without her.
